English for IT Basics is a course designed for learners with basic English skills (CEFR A2), particularly those working in or training for entry-level roles in digital and IT-related fields.

English for IT Basics: People and Quantities is a course that builds essential English skills for communicating clearly, respectfully, and effectively in workplace and community tech settings. Learners focus on using impersonal and indefinite pronouns to discuss general processes, event participation, and team dynamics in IT Support and Community Management. They gain control over quantifiers to describe collaboration and resources, and build vocabulary to talk about cybersecurity threats like phishing and online attacks.

You can take the course by yourself or as part of a program with an instructor or teacher and complete it in 15 hours.

It has been designed specifically to help you:

The exam covers the following objectives:

  • Understand English grammar to an intermediate level
  • Be familiar with some of the key vocabulary and phrases used in the world of IT
  • Read simple texts and understand the overall theme
  • Parse simple texts to find key information
  • Determine when desired information is missing from a text or document
  • Extract key details from conversations between colleagues
  • Understand the main points of a short conversation between two speakers when they are discussing topics related to IT
  • Understand when speakers are expressing opinions and determine their points of view
  • Discuss digital tasks and their results using varied grammar forms
  • Ask for and give instructions, describe processes and product features
  • Describe situations using extended sentence structures
  • Write sentences or short paragraphs giving description and detail using industry vocabulary
  • Apply accurate grammar and vocabulary in written texts
  • Incorporate essential elements such as time reference, word formation and structure

Course Contents

The fourth English for IT Basics course starts at the beginner level, and will take you up to the intermediate level.

In this course, you will:

  • use generic and impersonal pronouns in IT communication
  • recognize and use indefinite pronouns in workplace communication and demostrate understanding of tech support listening texts and team emails
  • apply common quantifiers and indefinite compound pronouns in IT-related contexts and general statements
  • understand and use key cybersecurity vocabulary, and interpret dialogues about attacks and online security risks
  • form polite, indirect questions with wh-pronouns accuretely
  • understand messages about cybersecurity and safe online behavior
  • understand and apply regular and irregular adjectives, including how to use prefix and suffix forms to describe performance and workplace qualities in IT projects
